To be considered an internship, rather than a part-time job, the experience must have an intentional and significant focus on student learning and a defined beginning and end date.

International students must always obtain specific employment authorization to engage in a paid internship, namely Curricular Practical Training for F-1 students, or Academic Training for J-1 students.

Internships or other academic activities that may involve payment or benefits are treated as employment.
